19th New York African Film Festival

The 19th New York African Film Festival runs from April 11 – 17Presented under the theme 21st Century: The Homecoming, this year’s New York African Film Festival screens contemporary and classic African films that explore the notion of home and homeland from the legacy of music legend Miriam Makeba to the New York-set Restless City. 


Another film is Andy Amadi Okoroafor's Relentless which follows a returning soldier (Gideon Okeke) from Sierra Leone to Lagos where he tries to re-build his life as an emotionally stunted security company director also starring Nneka, and Jimmy Jean Louise. While Playing Warriors by Director Rumbi  Katedza is reminiscent of a Zimbabwe's Sex and the City. 


The Education of Auma Obama is a captivating and intimate portrait of U.S. president Barack Obama’s older half-sister, who embodies a post-colonial, feminist identity in her native Kenya by Nigerian-born director Branwen Okpako and Funke Akindele plays a mother in Maami, a film adapted by Tunde Kelani.
